KEYOTE:

  • Title: Investigating the Security Evaluation Process for 5G Technologies
  • Abstract: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, and other federal government agencies are seeking to use the new capabilities and services fifth generation (5G) cellular networks offer. Federal agencies are experimenting with and piloting 5G’s enhanced mobile broadband capability as well as its ultra-reliable, low-latency service, massive connectivity for internet of things devices and edge computing. To move from pilot to implementation of new 5G technologies, proposed federal systems must go through a rigorous security assessment and authorization process defined in federal security guidance such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Risk Management Framework. In this presentation, attendees from academia, industry and the research community will be introduced to the proposed 5G security evaluation process that federal agencies could use. Also during this presentation, the question whether and how existing security assessment guidance and standards can be adapted for 5G-enabled systems will be discussed. This presentation also will inform attendees of security considerations for a 5G-enabled system via a repeatable process that can be used to guide system-level activities.
  • Speaker: Mr. Vincent Sritapan (Cybersecurity and Intrastructure Security Agency)

Vincent Sritapan is a Section Chief in the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Cyber Quality Service Management Office (QSMO). In this position, Sritapan is leading the development and delivery of cloud and mobile security services and capabilities to help protect the networks of Federal and State, Local, Tribal and Territorial government agencies. As a Section Chief in the Cybersecurity QSMO, Sritapan is leading CISA’s cross-functional teams that are tackling emerging risks and developing cybersecurity services to address enterprise cloud and mobile challenges. 

He is Co-Chair of the Federal CIO Council’s Federal Mobility Group, a cross-agency forum helping drive strategy development in mobility and sharing information across Federal departments and agencies, and as Co-Chair of the Committee for National Security Systems’ Mobile and Wireless Security (CNSS) Working Group. Prior to joining CISA, Sritapan served six years as the Mobile Security R&D Program Manager at the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, where he led R&D efforts in mobile security. He also is a direct commissioned officer in Information Warfare in the U.S. Navy Reserve. 

Mr. Sritapan holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems from California State University, Northridge; a Master’s in National Security Studies; and a Master’s in Business Administration in Information Assurance and Security Management from California State University, San Bernardino.
