Boosting Verticals into Wireless Orbit

Launching from 5G communications, evolution towards 6G is expected to become distributed intelligent communications, sensing, and localization system. Though such a demand has gained support from existing techniques such as massive MIMO and small cells, they heavily depend on the quality of the uncontrollable wireless environments. Differently, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), also referred to as Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS), is a new type of ultra-thin meta material inlaid with multiple sub-wavelength scatters, which can create favorable propagation conditions by controlling the phase shifts of the reflected waves at the surface. As such, the incident signals are directly reflected towards the destination without any extra cost of power source or hardware. However, due to the coupling of the propagation environment and the configurations of the RIS, existing protocols and design methodologies cannot be applied in a straightforward manner. Therefore, it is essential to explore and develop new communication and signal processing techniques.

This workshop aims to bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss the major challenges and recent breakthroughs related to reconfigurable intelligent surface. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

  • Physical modeling of RIS
  • Channel modeling for RIS-assisted wireless communications
  • Fundamental performance limits of RIS-based wireless communications
  • Machine learning for RIS-empowered wireless networks
  • Configurations design for RIS networks
  • Testbed implementations for RIS
  • Resource allocation for RIS assisted wireless communications
  • Algorithms and protocol design for RIS assisted wireless networks
  • Distributed deployment and network optimization for RIS-assisted communication
  • Security in RIS-based wireless communications
  • RIS aided localization
  • RIS-enabled RF sensing
  • Emerging applications of RIS
  • Integration of RIS with existing wireless technologies (e.g., small cells, Massive MIMO, millimeter-wave communications, visible light communications, THz communication, IoT, D2D communications, UAV communications, energy harvesting, etc.)

The workshop will feature one keynote speech given by a world leading researcher in the field. The workshop accepts only original and previously unpublished papers. All submissions must be formatted in standard IEEE camera-ready format (double-column, 10pt font). The maximum number of printed pages is six including figures. Regular review process is conducted assigning at least 3 independent reviewers for each paper. Authors should submit their contributions through EDAS.
